Terrorist Attack: Necessary Citizen Response

Terrorist attacks are one of the most unpredictable and stressful disasters. As citizens, there are certain measures you can take to help you prepare should an emergency arise.

Adequately preparing before a disaster can minimize stress and danger during a disaster. You need to develop an emergency communications plan that includes a contact out-of-town you can call should a disaster occur, a meeting place away from home that your family can stay at, and assemble a disaster supplies kit that includes personal medication, first aid supplies, sleeping bags, change of clothing, battery operated radio with extra batteries, food, water, and important personal documents. For more specific ways to prepare, contact your local officials or Red Cross chapter.

If disaster strikes, remain calm and patient while following the advice of your local emergency officials. Stay up to date by listening to your radio or television. Check for injuries and help those who are seriously injured. If the disaster occurs near your home while you are present, you should check for damage using a flash light (do not light candles or matches or turn on electrical switches), look for any gas leaks or fire hazards. Should you find any damaged utilities, you should shut them off and leave the house if there are gas leaks or fire hazards. Remember to minimize telephone use after calling your family contact, telephone lines often are overwhelmed during an emergency.

If local emergency authorities ask you to evacuate, do so immediately. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy shoes if you can to protect yourself. Remember to bring your disaster supplies kit and lock your home after calling your family contact.
