Wild Fire: Necessary Citizen Response

As wildfires are fast spreading disasters, citizens most importantly should be extremely aware of news events during the prime season for fires. Additionally, before the fire months began, citizens living in wooded areas must try to create what is known as a "D-zone." This is a 30-100 ft. region surrounding the house, which should contain well-trimmed, low cut grass, limited dry brush or foliage and no synthetic fuels like oil, petrol or propane. Such a preventative measure will diminish the ability of a wildfire to spread near one's home.

In regards to response procedures, the primary goal after determining the presence of a fire is contacting emergency authorities. During this communication, citizens should first notify authorities of the presence of the fire and then inquire as to the growth rate and dimensions of the flames. If one learns that the fire is moving slowly, then the appropriate response would be to quickly pack water, non perishable foods, important documents (passport, certificates of citizenship and national eligibility, work related papers), credit cards, limited selection of clothes and cash into a car and leave in the open, unimpeded direction. One should drive using the provided roadways or highway system and seek adherence to traffic laws to better facilitate an orderly evacuation.

Should the flames be moving too quickly or have already encircled one's house (regardless of how near or far away), efforts should be taken to distance oneself from any fuel sources, be they located either within the house or as a natural element. If the fuel sources are kept within the house, one should immediately take and keep them as far away as possible from the house. In the event that the flames do reach one's home, the removal of the incendiaries would diminish the likelihood of the house rapidly burning or suddenly imploding.

While undertaking these measures, family members should keep in constant contact with rescue and emergency management official. Using the telephone or a cell phone, individuals should provide these officials with house coordinates so as to expedite extraction procedures. In the most ideal situations, helicopters will be sent to pick up stranded citizens. Quickly board these vehicles with your packed belongings to escape from the scene.

After the fires have subsided, wait for at least one full day before venturing into the region or until environmental investigators have deemed your site a safe location. Even if they do not completely raze, fires can significantly weaken the foundations of buildings.
